A New View of Pet Insurance

A New View of Pet Insurance
February 12, 2024

Family Veterinary Services recommends that new pet parents consider pet insurance when first acquiring a new bundle of fuzzy love.

Unlike the pet insurance of yesterday, which was more like “wellness plans” that allowed pet parents to plan ahead and set aside for annual wellness care (vaccinations, preventatives, lab work, etc.) and would reimburse clients a percentage of what they spent on approved services, pet insurance companies today function more like traditional insurance and cover accident or chronic illness once a selected deductible has been met.

Just like we have for our auto and homes, pet insurance companies are offering different options in deductibles, levels of coverage, and so on.  And there is a benefit in enrolling young pets. Some companies offer free trial periods from the very first visit, allowing for the potential to have a problem found during the first exam to be covered. For certain breeds, prone to specific health issues, this may be a big help! Likewise, as our friends age and develop the aches and pains that go with certain chronic conditions, pet insurance can help take the sting out of the cost of long-term medications.

In the event of emergencies, it’s a relief to know pet insurance will cover a large portion of treatments if your pet is already enrolled. Sometimes that assurance is what allows pet parents to be able to authorize emergency treatment that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

We have links to a few trusted Pet Insurance companies on our website and there are many others out there. We encourage you to explore the various options. It’s also a great idea to call the companies to speak to a representative who can explain what sets them apart from everyone else so you can choose a company and plan that will work best for your new family member for many years to come!
